The Resort Village of Candle Lake now has a plan for how to manage its finances after approving this year’s budget.

Administration and council held several budget meetings over the past few months and last Friday, council passed the 2022 budget.

“We are committed to providing good service to our residents, seasonal residents, and visitors, to maintaining and improving our existing infrastructure, and to undertaking new projects that will benefit our community in the long-term,” said Mayor Terry Kostyna. “With our new staff now on board and continuing to learn about our community, we are confident we will achieve our goal of developing a realistic, well-costed five-year capital plan for the Resort Village.”

The budget for the Resort Village will see a three per cent increase in property tax revenue with the Mill Rate increasing to 3.1 mills, for an annual revenue increase of $43,260.

In a media release, Candle Lake said these increases are attributed to several factors including increases in the cost of the Resort Village’s contract with the RCMP, the hiring of an additional, seasonal bylaw officer, and the overall rising costs of goods and services.

The average homeowner will see an estimated increase to their property taxes of around $55 per year with commercial property owners seeing a rise of about $75 per year.

This year, Candle Lake said it will invest almost $2 million in capital projects including a new garbage truck, community safety officer patrol vehicle, greenspace master plan, and starting work on the landfill cell decommission.

“We are very grateful to our administration and senior levels of government who have enabled us to secure over $500,000 in grants to cover some of the costs of these projects,” said Kostyna.
