MELFORT, Sask. — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said bird flu has been found in Alberta poultry flocks and there are some new cases in Ontario.

The agency said the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian flu was confirmed Wednesday in two poultry flocks in Mountain View County and one flock in Ponoka County in Alberta.

There were also new cases confirmed in poultry flocks in the City of Markham, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and Prince Edward County in Ontario.

CFIA said in a release yesterday the infected premises have been placed under quarantine, there is an investigation, and it will be establishing movement control measures on other farms within these areas.

The cases have been reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

CFIA said avian influenza is not a significant public health concern for healthy people who are not in regular contact with infected birds.

RCMP are investigating after two cows were killed, skinned and had their meat taken in a rural community northeast of Calgary.

Police said the carcasses were discovered Monday behind a cemetery in Swalwell, Alta.

It’s believed they were dumped there sometime between last Thursday and Monday. RCMP do not know where the cows came from.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Team Alberta Crops has added four new farmer organizations to its group to include producers of potatoes, sugar beets, bees, and seed.
