Apr 7, 2022 | 9:58 AM

MELFORT, Sask. – Packaging serves many useful and essential functions in the food system from protecting food from contamination to preserving it during transportation.

The fresh produce industry is looking for ways to transition to more environmentally-friendly packaging options that enhance recycling and composting.

The Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) is part of a national pilot project to help industry better understand the food and produce packaging system in Canada, assess the impacts of various packaging options and create an action plan.

Manufacturers, packaging producers, retailers and recycling facilities will be involved in the movement towards viable sustainable packaging options.

The federal government is providing $376,200 funds for the study.

The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions want to hear from farmers about the problems they experienced with grain contract cancellations.

The 2021 drought had a dramatic impact on farmers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and their ability to fill contracts.

The Grain Contracts Producer Survey is open to all Western Canadian farmers. All survey responses will be kept anonymous.

Farmers who participate will be entered into a draw for two Yeti insulated mugs.

The survey closes midnight April 8.
