New exhibit showcases the unique and often forgotten art in Prince Albert

Local art will again be on display as a new exhibit hopes to showcase the unique masterpieces from the city.

As part of the Artists in Communities program, a new display is now open at the John V. Hicks Gallery until April 23.

The exhibit is titled “Symbiosis: Art and the community” and as curator Jesse Campbell explains, it’s a culmination of nearly a year of work from local artists.

“For the past 10 months, we’ve had a group of artists who work in visual arts, writing, and theatre and they have been connecting with various community organizations and using their art practices to help people who have had barriers in life, kind of find their unique voices and show them how creativity can be a wonderful way to translate their life experiences and feelings and thoughts into works of art.”

The Artists in Communities project is part of the City of Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan which helps to develop long term and sustained arts programs in areas of this city outside of traditional art spaces and to use arts to connect with people who might not have access to it.

Campbell also mentioned the project included Prince Albert creative writer Lynda Monahan working as a mentor to some of the artists to help them develop their art skills, connect them with different organizations and build relationships and trust with people.

“Our goal is that, over time, these will blossom into regular parts of organizations’ programming for the people that they serve,” said Campbell. “We’re happy that this exhibition will share the fruits of all of those art sections and give people a chance to hear from voices in our community that they may not otherwise hear from.”

Other artists that are featured in the exhibit include Marcy Friesen, Beth Gobeil, Adreanna Boucher, and Alan Ruder.
