New $40 base tax fairer, says council
Using a base tax of $40 that every property must pay rather than relying entirely on a percentage is fairer, said Mayor Greg Dionne.
Council has now passed first and second readings of multiple bylaws regarding the 2022 tax collection and has set a special meeting for Tuesday for third reading.
Dionne said he sympathizes with property owners that might have difficulty with the extra costs but added that everyone benefits from services such as police and fire.
“For police and fire, if you had to pay that alone on your tax bill, would be $1800,” he said.
