P.A. residents raise over $15K for charities supporting Ukraine

Over $15,000 has been raised by Prince Albert residents for two charities helping Ukraine and its people.

Several local people and the Veselka Prince Albert & District Ukrainian Cultural & Heritage Club hosted a cultural supper and silent auction over the weekend at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Around 300 meals were prepared with the auction featuring items donated by members of the community.

“I’m just really pleasantly overwhelmed with the support that this whole thing has received from not just the Ukrainian community but the wider, complete Prince Albert community,” said co-organizer Taras Kachkowski.

Around $12,000 was raised through the meals. The chefs wanted to support the troops, so all the funds are being given to the Come Back Alive Foundation.

“There are a couple of charitable groups that work with the forces, but even though (Come Back Alive) works with the forces their mission is a more peace-promoting one,” added Kachkowski.

The foundation is known to provide protective and non-lethal equipment.

The silent auction raised around $3,500. These funds will be given to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation which is currently undergoing humanitarian efforts for the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, Kachkowski added there have been talks about holding another event.

“Hopefully the next time a similar event gets arranged… it’s in celebration of hostilities finally being over and we can return to a peaceful, normal life.”

He noted the Veselka Club did discuss the idea shortly after wrapping up the supper and auction, however, nothing has been set in stone.
