City of P.A. offers tips to avoid flooding during spring runoff

Mar 24, 2022 | 11:23 AM

As the snow continues to melt due to warmer temperatures, the City of Prince Albert are reminding residents of ways to avoid potential flooding.

The amount of snow this winter has been the most we’ve seen in 30 years as it accumulated over the last five months.

The city recommends the people of P.A. remove snow around the foundation of their homes. It’s important to start with the snow closest to basement windows as it can seep through cracks and dampen the basement. It can also even damage the foundation of the house.

“Shovelling now is hard work but you can do a lot by tackling the task by doing a little bit every day,” the city wrote in a media release.

They also encourage homeowners to clean snow and ice from the bottom of their downspouts. They say people should also extend the spouts at least two metres to keep water away from the foundation. Residents should also clear the gutters of leaves, ice and snow.

They ask the public to help keep catch basins clear and clear snow, ice and debris from the area. Shovelling snow onto the streets can lead to blocked drains so they ask to keep the snow in your yard. The city is busy steaming frozen catch basins and asked the public to report any they see to the public works department.

Motorists driving in the city should be aware of potholes or pools of water, which could lead to vehicle damage. New potholes will be appearing as the snow melts because most are created during the freeze/thaw cycle.
