Spring – Time To Remember Dangers of Rotten Ice
Mar 18, 2022 | 9:56 AM
Have you ever heard of rotten ice?
When ice forms, every layer does not freeze the same way to create a smooth, hard surface. Instead, there can be snow, dirt or air pockets between layers.
When thawing occurs, the ice becomes honeycombed, with small empty pockets between layers. This weakens the ice by creating voids and dangerous conditions. Ice conditions can change rapidly, especially during the spring thaw.
The best rule of thumb? Always check the thickness before venturing further.
