About six months after nine-year-old Baeleigh Maurice was struck by a vehicle and killed while riding her scooter in a crosswalk on 33rd Street West, a woman has been charged.

Saskatoon police say the 28-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was high when she hit Maurice on Sept. 9. The woman’s toxicology report showed THC levels that exceeded the legal limit.

Police arrested the woman Friday morning. It’s unknown when she’s to make her first court appearance.

The incident is still under investigation.

Rallies have been held to support Maurice’s family since her death. In January, her mom, Rochelle Dubois, and supporters went to Saskatoon police headquarters to raise awareness about the ongoing investigation.

Dubois also wrote a letter to Police Chief Troy Cooper expressing her frustration at the lack of action.

“I really thought nobody cared,” Dubois said in the letter. “As a mother whose baby was taken so tragically, I have endured extreme anxiety, stress, sleepless nights, and mental anguish knowing that the Saskatoon City Police has not made the investigation into the tragic death of my baby a priority.”
