City to receive reports on reconciliation, public art purchase and hear public concerns

Mar 11, 2022 | 11:12 AM

The agenda for the next meeting of city council is not long but it is packed.

Listed for consideration is a 41-page attachment on Truth and Reconciliation and how the city has fared in implementing their own procedures to address it.

Council will get information on the calls to action presented by the national commission along with actions taken by other cities, such as Saskatoon. Also included in the report is the list of actions already taken by the city.

Council will also decide on whether to commission a piece of art from Mary Longman at a cost of $123,000.

If council pursues the purchase, the finished piece would be titled Passage Home and be installed in Scarrow Plaza this September on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

Longman is a Saskatchewan born artist of Saulteaux heritage and a member of the Gordon First Nation, as well as being an association professor of art and art history at the University of Saskatchewan.

Two letters from the public are also on the agenda.

One person has concerns regarding a property tax assessment and the other person was weighing in on the issue with city buses.

Council will also consider a request from the Royal Canadian Legion to install monuments in Memorial Square.

The Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for 4:00 pm at City Hall on March 14.
