Property sales in Northern communities seeing big drop to start 2022, SRA not concerned

Mar 9, 2022 | 4:58 PM

The northern part of Saskatchewan isn’t having as much fun selling properties to start the year when compared to 2021.

According to the Saskatchewan Realtors Association (SRA), cities and regions across the north are seeing sizable drops in the number of sales over the first two months of the year.

Across the entire province, the seven areas seeing the biggest drop are the Town of Battleford, North Battleford, Prince Albert, the Prince Albert Region, Melfort, the Melfort Region, and Meadow Lake.

All communities saw at least a 34 per cent decrease in sales year-over-year with the Town of Battleford seeing the largest drop, around 64 per cent.

The SRA told paNOW it’s not too surprising many areas are seeing an overall drop in sales as 2021 was a record-setting year. There were more than 17,000 sales across the entire province.

All areas, except for PA, are also outperforming long-term averages in terms of sales.

The SRA added the start to last year was also a bit of an anomaly as January and February are typically the slowest months, at least for inventory.

However, this isn’t the current case for some communities.

“While it is early in the year, we have seen a significant rise in the months of supply in North Battleford and Prince Albert regions,” the SRA said in its monthly report.

Meanwhile, the community in the north which saw the smallest drop was Humboldt which had a 15 per cent drop.
