Prince Albert wrestlers lock up medals at regionals

Mar 7, 2022 | 2:00 PM

Wrestlers from both St. Mary and Carlton High Schools left their mark on the mats last weekend.

Out of 19 St. Mary students who attended the regional competition in Outlook, all but three have moved on to provincials.

St. Mary also won the team title for the 5A boys, as well as the team title for the 5A girls.

Among the tournament highlights for St. Mary was the performance of captain Logan Campbell, who had recently recovered from knee surgery, and won gold.

He was able to use his greco throwing experience to upset the Moose Jaw athlete in an easy 20 seconds.

Another great story was Owen Ferchuk, a young grade 10 athlete who was able to pin a very strong Grade 12 athlete from Swift Current for the gold.

Angel Besskkaystare, one of St. Mary’s strongest female wrestlers, and team captain, dropped down to the 64 kilo weight class and totally dominated.

She won gold by wrestling a total mat time of just over two minutes for all four matches.

St Mary Gold:

Angel Besskkaystare
Nathan Kowal
Corban Taylor
Emma Henry
Raelynn Sande

Carlton High School finished fourth overall for total points.

Landon Mudjar won gold in the men’s 90 kg division, while Troy Earing finished first in the 130+ division.

David Ndaruhutse claimed silver (65 kg).

On the women’s side, Charleigh Barden won gold, and Kayley Clarke came home with bronze.

Provincials will be held in Saskatoon in two weeks.
