Model trains return to P.A. after nearly three-year hiatus

Mar 7, 2022 | 3:00 PM

For the first time in two and a half years, model trains were centre stage at Midtown Hall in Prince Albert.

The Prince Albert Model Train Show took place this past weekend, finally giving hobbyists the chance to build and show their trains and miniature villages to the community.

Displays of different sizes and landscapes filled the inside of the hall, most depicting rural Saskatchewan and Manitoba with all sorts of trains on the tracks, from grain cars to oil cars, steam engines passenger trains, there was no shortage.

The show featured models from the Prince Albert Model Railroaders as well as some from the Prairie Rail Workshop – Model Railroad Club in Saskatoon and the Rocky Ridge Model Rail Club from Martensville.

President of the Prince Albert club, Brian Randall was thrilled to finally have the show back after COVID derailed plans the last two years.

“Guys have been working on their layouts, all the different clubs around the province, and we’re just happy to have a fun weekend (and) get together.”

The club will be heading to other shows in the coming months including one of western Canada’s biggest shows, the All Aboard Model Train Show at the end of the month in Saskatoon.

When asked if shows like these will boost interest in model trains as a hobby, Randall said it would.

“The kids, they love coming and seeing everything and we know the dads like seeing it just as much as the kids do, so that helps. As time goes on, all the other cities are going to start opening up their shows. So, we’ll be kind of doing maybe four or five shows a year.”
