City Transit service to provide transport for high school students beginning later this year

The City of Prince Albert and the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) have announced the regular school bus service for high school students will no longer be available starting September of this year.

SRPSD will encourage its students to use the City of Prince Albert Transit service starting this school year. The schools that will be impacted include Carlton Comprehensive High School, Wesmor Public High School, Prince Albert Collegiate Institute and Won Ska Cultural Public School.

However, for the students in specialized learning centres and the Functional Integrated programs, transportation services will be provided by the school division.

“This partnership with city transport will give the high school students more options as there is a continuous service throughout the day and more stops serving more areas,” said Evan Hastings, Transportation and Traffic manager for the City of Prince Albert. “The city is committed to improving the reliability of the transit fleet and we are looking forward to serving the new riders.”

The city will be looking at possible route changes to better serve the students ahead of the school year. The current transit service has 140 bus stops which will provide coverage for neighbourhoods despite what school they attend.

The city also anticipates this change will increase ridership and increase the culture of city transit. They will review the system throughout the year to make sure they can handle the additional people at peak hours.

“SRPSD is confident that our students will be well served by this change. We will continue to work with students, parents, and the city to ensure effective transportation opportunities are available,” said Jerrold Pidborochynski, Chief Financial Officer for the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division.

Students will be able to purchase a subsidized bus pass for $20 a month and will be available throughout the whole year, not just on school days.
