Mar 4, 2022 | 10:47 AM

The Saskatchewan government has announced the upcoming public inquest into the death of Ronalda Wescoup.

The 40-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her cell at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert on June 4, 2019. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Wescoup was pronounced deceased.

The inquest into her death will be held April 4 to 8, 2022, at the Coronet Hotel at 3551 Second Avenue West in Prince Albert with it set to begin at 10 a.m. on the first day.

Coroner Robert Kennedy, Q.C. will preside at the inquest.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish the details of who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death.

Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.
