Spring cattle show coming to Lloydminster in March

LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. — Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association is getting ready to hold its upcoming spring cattle show that is already seeing plenty of interest.

The annual Progress Steer and Heifer Show, planned for March 18 to 20, is an opportunity for exhibitors to “see where their animals stack up against the competition,” as they get ready to move into 4-H shows, as well as the summer show circuit.

Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association’s Agricultural Manager Shelly Ann Dodgson said entries for the show, sponsored by GMACK Oilfield Services Ltd., are already filled.

With the province lifting COVID-19 restrictions, it is also good news for the show. Dodgson said even before the province’s announcement, the event has been enjoying a great deal of support from the public.

“We have increased from 125 to 180 head at the show this year,” she said. “We’re really excited, and we have lots of sponsors on board. It’s great.”

Dodgson is also thrilled to see a full show roster.

“The first week in February we reached our entry limit and capacity,” she said. “We had lots of interest, so we could have had more if we had had more space.”

Many of the junior exhibitors are looking forward to meeting their friends again, coming from across Saskatchewan and Alberta.

“A lot of them are good friends because they are in breed associations together or through 4-H programming,” Dodgson said.

Animals will start arriving at their stalls March 18 with the actual cattle show dates planned for March 19 and 20.

The Junior Show runs on the Saturday starting at 12 p.m. for exhibitors ages 21 and under. Prizes for the Junior Show winners for the Grand Champion Steer and Heifer will be $300 each, while the Reserve Champion Steer and Heifer winners will receive $200 each.

Many of the progress steers presented in the show will be sold by the 4-H and junior members later in the summer.

“We have everything from Angus, Simmental, Speckle Park, Maine-Anjou, Charolais…, and a lot of crossbreds,” Dodgson said of the selection.

On Sunday there will be an open show for steers and heifers starting at 9 a.m. The top prizes in this show will be $1,000 each for the Grand Champions and $750 each for the Reserve Champions.

Several vendors will also be at the event, and a canteen will be available for people to grab a snack during their visit.

The cattle show will be held in the Saskatchewan Building on the Lloyd Ex grounds; admission to attend is free.
