SaskTel waiving fees for calls, texts to Ukraine

Feb 25, 2022 | 2:08 PM

SaskTel is trying to help people in the province connect with friends and family in Ukraine.

The Crown corporation announced Friday it’s waiving long-distance charges for SaskTel wireless, landline and business calls made from Canada to Ukraine, and international text messaging fees for text messages sent from Canada to Ukraine.

As well, SaskTel won’t collect roaming charges for calls and texts or data overages for customers currently in Ukraine.

All of those fees will be waived until March 31.

“In times like these, it’s important that we come together and support those in our community who are impacted by the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine,” Don Morgan, the province’s minister responsible for SaskTel, said in a media release.

“To the thousands of Ukrainian-Canadian families that call our province home, please know that Saskatchewan stands with you and Ukraine.”

Bell Canada, Rogers Communications, Telus and Shaw Communications also announced customers will not be charged to connect with loved ones in the embattled region.

Rogers and its mobile subsidiary Fido Solutions said roaming fees for clients in Ukraine will also be set aside until the end of March.

Russian military forces attacked Ukraine on Wednesday, leaving many Saskatchewan residents worried about friends and family members in Ukraine.
