Local coffee shop upgrades fundraising option

A local Prince Albert business is hoping the launch of its new website, will help more groups raise important funds.

For roughly the past two years, Dr. Java’s has been running an in-store promotion where interested groups can buy a select number of bags of the in-store made coffee, and get a cut of the proceeds. Co-owner Brandy Mogg said issues arose with people either pre-buying too many bags, or not buying enough.

“We just kinda noticed the simpler we can make it for them, the easier it was,” she said.

Mogg explained the new online option allows more groups to get involved, while also eliminating the responsibility by the groups to collect any funds. In fact the only time the group deals with any funds is when they are cut their cheque from Dr. Java’s.

“People can go right into the link, order, pay, and enter their information and then we fill the orders and deliver them to the group and get the groups to distribute them,” she said.

Among the groups that have benefitted so far from the fundraising idea are the Waskesiu and St. Louis Fire Departments, as well as the community alcohol strategy, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Last year’s Java for Jett fundraiser, a young boy diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, raised over $12,000.

Commenting that they have received some great response so far from the groups who have utilized the online option, Mogg re-iterated their goal is to simplify things as much as they can to make it as user friendly as possible for the various groups and community members.

“Especially with all the restrictions we’ve had with COVID and the pressure that has put on a lot of groups for their fundraising efforts,” Mogg said.

Currently the two groups using the online option are the Barveenok Ukranian Dance group and the Conservation Learning Centre.
