Mintos’ Cossette ejected from final regular-season game in loss to Contacts

The Prince Albert Mintos lost their final game of the regular season 4-1 to the Saskatoon Contacts— but what’s more concerning is they might not have the services of the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League’s top point scorer.

Jacob Cossette was ejected from Sunday’s defeat 3:22 into the third period. Cossette tried to bull rush his way through a check at the Contacts’ blueline, but got his stick up high and was given a cross-checking major and game misconduct as a result.

Although other teams have games remaining, Cossette has seven more points than any other SMU18AAAHL player, with 75 (and 25 goals). Should he face additional punishment, the Mintos may have to start the postseason without him.

On Sunday’s game itself, the Mintos had some issues containing Berkly Catton, which to be fair is a common occurrence for any team that faces the first overall pick in the past WHL Prospects Draft. Catton had two assists and a goal himself on the Contacts’ first three goals of the game. Despite playing just 20 games in his 15-year-old season, Catton has 16 goals and 40 points.

Ashton Tait that the lone Mintos’ marker early in the second period, his 28th to lead the Mintos.

The Mintos will finish the season on 53 points and in sixth place, but could be leapfrogged by the Saskatoon Contacts should they win their final game. The Contacts now have 52 points after Monday’s victory.
