SGI & police reminding you to be extra careful on roads over long weekend

Feb 19, 2022 | 8:00 AM

People aiming to celebrate the Family Day long weekend outside their homes are being reminded to drive carefully.

Roads are expected to be busier than normal, and SGI wants you to know the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt.

“Even one person whose life is lost prematurely due to a preventable auto collision is one too many,” said Tyler McMurchy, spokesperson for SGI.

In 2021, 87 people died in vehicle crashes across Saskatchewan with the majority caused by the four habits.

“If everybody just did what they were supposed to with regards to those four habits, our roads would be a lot safer. We would lose a lot fewer of our friends and family,” added McMurchy.

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Police Service is also encouraging you to be extra careful when on the roads this weekend.

Spokesperson Charlene Tebbutt told paNOW traffic officers will be out on patrol like they always are every long weekend.

Police and SGI aren’t expecting anything too crazy despite this being the first holiday since the proof of vaccination system was lifted in Saskatchewan.
