Mintos assert dominance early in win over Maulers

Feb 13, 2022 | 4:21 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos took care of business on Super Bowl Sunday with a 5-0 win over the Yorkton Maulers at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Mintos established their dominance early, leading 3-0 in goals and 21-4 in shots after the opening frame, with goals from Ashton Tait, Zach Bansley and Ryan Lepitzki.

Like he has been all season, Jacob Cossette was an issue that the Maulers didn’t have a solution for, first fighting through two checks to gain entry into the Maulers’ zone for the Tait goal. Cossette then had a similar entry halfway through the opening frame finding Bansley backdoor for the second goal of the game. He then scored his own goal in the second to make it 4-0.

Cossette now has 69 points on the season as he continues to lead the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League in that regard.

Captain Rhett Ravndahl scored in the third period making it 5-0 as the seconds ticked on.

With a delayed penalty coming to the Maulers already down a man, Mintos’ Ryland Martin attempted a back pass, but it missed its target and went all the way back into his own goal. Mintos’ goaltender Jayden Kraus had already gone to the Mintos’ bench for the extra attacker. The goal was waved off by the officials as the Mintos maintained their 5-0 advantage.

Kraus got his third shutout and 13th victory of the season making 20 saves.

The Mintos have now won two in a row after defeating the Tisdale Trojans 3-2 on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre. They will head to the Battlefords to take on the Stars on Wednesday, making up the game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 26.

The Mintos (23-15-2) will remain on the road on Friday and Saturday when they take on the Regina Pat Canadians and the Moose Jaw Warriors. Their next home game is Feb. 21 when they’ll take on the Saskatoon Contacts.
