P.A. & northern Saskatchewan seeing worst job growth in province to start 2022

Feb 4, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Prince Albert and the rest of northern Saskatchewan aren’t having the best start to 2022 when it comes to job growth.

According to Statistics Canada, the region lost around 1,100 jobs in January.

Unsurprisingly, the sector with the biggest loss was construction, losing roughly 1,000 spots, as most work happens during the warmer seasons.

The educational services sector had the largest increase, adding around 800 positions.

In total, approximately 96,600 people across northern Saskatchewan have jobs. This is the lowest amount the region’s seen since June 2021.

The other four regions in Saskatchewan had better starts to 2022.

Saskatoon-Biggar added around 2,400 positions, Regina-Moose Mountain decreased by about 200 jobs, Yorkton-Melville lost approximately 100 positions, and Swift Current-Moose Jaw lost roughly 600 spots.

This means the number of jobs in Saskatchewan grew by around 400 in January.
