MELFORT, Sask. – The federal and Manitoba governments are expanding the list of expenses under the Livestock Feed and Transportation Drought Assistance program.

Many producers have obtained feed and maintained their herds through bailing extra acres, renting extra pasture, hauling water and other extraordinary measures.

Among the additional costs now covered are rentals of additional crop or pasture acres, temporary fencing for supplemental grazing, hauling water, harvesting extra acres, or hauling self-produced feed from distant locations.

The program was established to help producers purchase and test feed for livestock to maintain their breeding herds, including through the transport of purchased feed from distant locations.

Eligible animals under the program include breeding animals of beef and dairy cattle, horses raised for pregnant mare urine, sheep, goats, bison, and elk.

So far, the program has processed more than 1,200 claims and will accept new claims until a deadline of April 15.

Canadian Olympian Sage Watson is being honoured with the 4-H Canada Distinguished Alumni Award.

4-H Canada CEO Shannon Benner said Watson is being recognized for the positive change she effects in the world as an elite athlete, mentor, philanthropist, and changemaker.

“Sage Watson is the very definition of a responsible, caring, and contributing leader, and we are honoured to add her name to the illustrious list of Distinguished Alumni Award recipients,” Benner said.

The two-time Olympian said growing up on a cattle ranch in southern Alberta taught her how to work hard toward her goals.

In addition to her strong athletic performance, Watson is also recognized for speaking up to advocate against media sexualization of female athletes and was part of a strong movement that resulted in increased awareness and adjustment of camera angles during Tokyo 2020.

The award will be presented to Watson during the awards ceremony to be held virtually on Feb. 23.
