MELFORT, Sask. – Another case of H5N1 avian influenza has government officials urging poultry producers to follow strong biosecurity measures.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed its third case in less than two months of the highly pathogenic influenza in Atlantic Canada.

The first case was found in a non-commercial flock in Newfoundland in December and was the first time this specific H5 virus had been identified in the Americas since 2015.

CFIA confirmed positive cases in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. There have also been several cases of H5N1 avian influenza in the eastern U.S. in the last month.

Organizations involved in the National Supply Chain Summit released a statement outlining their concerns over delays and cost increases of the containerized supply chain.

The members said the issue is raising concerns about Canada’s food security and the economic viability of Canadian importers and exporters.

The summit recognized the role government must play in working toward a long-term solution of the complex problems impacting all parts of containerized supply chains.

The Supply Chain Task Force announced by the federal government will consult with industry and make recommendations on short and long-term.

The group said the task force should bring industry and government departments together to deal with container service in the short-term, and support supply chain resiliency in the long-term.

Members of the Coalition to Fix the Container Crunch include the Canadian Produce Marketing Association, Pulse Canada, and Soy Canada.
