Riders, Fajardo agree to restructured deal for 2022

It appears Cody Fajardo is taking a pay cut.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Monday their starting quarterback had agreed to a restructured contract for the 2022 CFL season.

“Cody has always been the definition of a team player, and this is just another example of that,” Jeremy O’Day, the Roughriders’ vice-president of football operations, said in a media release.

“His leadership both on and off the field has been a large part of our success, and we appreciate his team-first mentality as we head into the 2022 season.”

TSN’s Dave Naylor has reported that Fajardo was to make $512,000 in 2022. It’s unknown what the 29-year-old quarterback’s new deal will pay him.

Fajardo initially signed with the Roughriders as a free agent in 2019 and took over as the starting QB after Zach Collaros suffered a concussion in Saskatchewan’s first regular-season game. Fajardo went on to be named the West Division’s most outstanding player that season.

He signed a two-year contract extension in October of 2019 and then extended his deal through 2022 in January of last year.

Fajardo threw for 2,970 yards and 14 touchdowns in the 2021 regular season and also rushed for 468 yards and four touchdowns.
