Unorthodox fundraiser

Love and kitty litter: SPCA fundraiser lets you dump on your ex

Feb 1, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Flame fizzled out? Catfished? Dumped? The adorable and adoptable kittens at the Prince Albert SPCA would like nothing more than to take a number two on your former number one. And, that’s no bull.

It’s part of an unorthodox Valentine’s Day fundraiser for the local animal shelter and people think it’s hilarious as evident by the comments on the P.A. SPCA’s Facebook page. One person wrote, “This is wayyyy too original and classy not to work.”

Shelter manager Ashlee Bober said the idea came from a humane society in the United States that did a similar fundraiser a couple of years ago with a lot of success. For a donation of your choice, you can send the SPCA a name, or names of a couple of people, you’d like them to write down on a piece of paper they stick into the cat’s litter boxes.

“Our cats will then do their business on those names,” Bober said. “Whether it’s an ex or someone you despise – maybe a boss, a family member or old friend, it’s all in good humour and not something to be taken too seriously. It’s just a creative way to raise some funds for the animals in need.”

Dollars raised will be used to help pay for animals that need medical attention. Bober said they frequently have animals come in with injuries during the winter, specifically cats with frost bite problems like frozen ears or tails.

“We ultimately have to get the vets to surgically remove those ears or tails and we’ve had some cats who needed toes removed because they’re frozen. It’s important for us to be able to do that for the cats so they can have their best quality of life. Every little bit of funding helps us do that,” she said.

Cats can be spiteful creatures and Bober said they are more than happy to ‘dump all over your ex.’ You can send your donation through e-transfer to donations.paspca@gmail.com or phone them at 306-763-6110. Any donation over $20 is eligible for a tax receipt.
