MELFORT, Sask. – The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) will continue the process of joining up with Alberta Barley.

AWC membership passed a resolution to pursue a farmer plebiscite on amalgamation at its annual general meeting.

Alberta Barley passed a similar resolution during their AGM in Banff last month.

AWC also announced its new executive. Greg Sears was elected the board chair, Jason Lenz will serve as vice-chair, and Shawn Jacula is second vice-chair.

The Western Canadian Dairy Seminar (WCDS) held in Alberta has been cancelled because of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 case numbers and health restrictions.

Organizers said producers and industry were suffering from ‘virtual fatigue’ so they decided not to hold an online event this year. All registrations will be fully refunded.

The 40th anniversary of the WCDS will be celebrated March 7 to 10, 2023.

Canadian and American officials met to discuss how to resolve a dispute surrounding P.E.I. potatoes.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and United States Secretary of Agriculture (USDA) Tom Vilsack, along with numerous other government representatives participated.

Vilsack has provided direction to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to proceed with the risk analysis of exporting PEI table stock potatoes to Puerto Rico and the continental U.S.

Bibeau emphasized the importance of restoring market access for potatoes for Canada and Islanders, while also emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

She maintained table stock potatoes are safe with the current risk mitigation measures in place.
