Bears steamroll Stars in big win with 6 different Bears scoring

Jan 20, 2022 | 9:04 PM

Although they’ve had mixed results against their biggest rivals this year, the Prince Albert Northern Bears dominating affairs Thursday against the Saskatoon Stars.

They scored just after the opening minute of the game and didn’t look like slowing down from there as they beat the Stars 6-2.

The Bears picked up their eighth win on the season (seventh in regulation) and now have 25 points on the season, five back of the Stars who are in fourth place with 30 points. The Bears are now 2-2 against the Stars this season (one regulation win, one shootout win, and two regulation defeats).

Just 1:04 in, captain Paige Dawson got the puck on goal through a screen, which was promptly lasered into the top left corner by her defensive partner on the play—Bears’ second-year player Jazlyn Petreman.

Then with 3:10 left in the opening frame, Julia Cey scored on a quick backhand from in close that surprised Stars’ goaltender Mikayla Christmann. That’s Cey’s 10th goal of the season.

Sophia Zuck streaked down the right zone and unleashed a wrist shot so nasty that no goaltender on planet earth would be able to stop, tucking a shot in off the crossbar on the high glove side halfway through the second period.

The Bears would add insult to injury as Calla Kampen stormed the crease to put home a rebound at the 16-minute mark of the second period.

Then with just 1:32 gone in the third period, Jasmine Kohl went five-hole to make the game 5-0.

The Stars would get on the board thanks to a wrist shot blocker side from Avery Bairos at the six-minute mark. Erin Kirkland would quicky restore the Bears’ five-goal lead, scoring on a rebound just one minute after.

Bairos would score with 6:51 remaining on the power play for her second of the game, but that’s as close as the Stars would get.

Bears’ goaltender Brooke Archer made 31 saves on 33 shots for her third win of the season.

The Bears will look to follow up on their big win when they head to Weyburn this weekend to battle the Gold Wings. Games are on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
