Raiders’ Chaika keeps the Oil Kings at bay for as long as he can in defeat to Edmonton
Prince Albert Raiders’ goaltender Tikhon Chaika kept the floodgates closed as long as he possibly could, but the Edmonton Oil Kings were finally able to break the dam down.
Chaika and the Raiders kept the Oil Kings off the board for the first 47:08 of the game, but the Oil Kings came to life and scored three goals within a 6:22-span on their way to a 4-1 victory. Chaika made 44 saves on 47 shots. Sebastian Cossa has a much easier night, as he made 21 saves on 22 Raider shots in the Oil Kings’ crease.
Despite getting almost doubled in shots 35-18 through the first 40 minutes, the Raiders did enjoy a 1-0 lead after two periods. Reece Vitelli scored a shorthanded breakaway goal, despite breaking his stick off a defensive zone faceoff, late in the sandwich stanza. Landon Kosior lifted the puck nicely behind the Oil Kings’ defence, allowing Vitelli to go on the breakaway, and had more than enough time to beat Oil Kings’ goaltender Sebastian Cossa on a second attempt.
The Oil Kings would tie the game up 7:08 into the third period as Dylan Guenther finally beat Chaika for the first time. Chaika was forced to scramble to the ice to stop Oil Kings captain Jake Neighbours right in front seconds earlier, and Guenther’s shot came in as Chaika couldn’t reset.
