Temperatures to drop this week in P.A. but not for long

Jan 17, 2022 | 5:00 PM

After a much-needed break from the frigid temperatures last week, Prince Albert residents will see a significant drop in temperatures this week, but it won’t last long.

Meteorologist Terri Lang with Environment Canada told paNOW there were mild temperatures but there is a “very rigorous” weather system moving through the province bringing snow with it.

“A fair amount, maybe five to 10 centimetres of snow maybe more in other pockets. It’s also bringing a lot of wind with it, so we’ll probably see some blowing and drifting snow out on those highways,” she said.

Behind this weather system, she said is when temperatures will start falling. We will start feeling the drop Tuesday afternoon she said when it hits -19 C with a windchill of -30 C. On Wednesday morning it could be as cold as -28 C or -30 C.

However, she added another weather system will be coming through north of the Northwest Territories on Thursday bringing milder temperatures with a high of -9 C, low of -10 C.

“Average temperatures for this time of year, highs of -13 C and overnight lows of -25 C,” Lang said. “So, we’ll be running closer to above average after Thursday. I think we might see some colder air sneak in but we’re not seeing any big arctic outbreak coming in.”

Melting and freezing ice

The warm weather has caused a lot of the pent-up ice to melt but with colder temperatures this week the melting snow will quickly freeze to sidewalks and roadways.

Parkland Ambulance is asking residents if they didn’t get a chance to do it this weekend, give your sidewalk a good scrape to remove the ice and apply some de-icing salt.

“We live in a climate where it requires that constant attention to get out there on a day like it is today where there is a little bit of snow falling if you had some melting it’s going to be a slippery surface,” said Lyle Karasiuk, Director of Public Affairs for Parkland Ambulance. “We want folks to take their time, I mean I can’t stress that enough.”

Parkland Ambulance often responds to these types of calls and he said people are often embarrassed and want to get up right away. It’s important to stop before doing so and make sure all your limbs move normally before getting up. If you try to get up too soon it could make the injury worse.

When it’s slippery and icy, Karasiuk said people should walk like a penguin to ensure they don’t fall.

“Just think of if you see a penguin walking, they kind of waddle back and forth and they kind of shuffle, that’s what you need to do on a slippery surface. Good shoes or no good shoes, good boots no good boots, walking assist or no walking assist when you feel the sense of the surface is slippery just take your time, walk like a penguin you’ll get there just as fine.”
