Members of the Prince Albert unit of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) are inviting the general public to join the Prince Albert organization.

“It’s a way to make new friends and become involved in your community,” said Marcel Dagenais, an executive member at the local Unit 222 and also a Dominion Vice President representing Saskatchewan. “We enjoy getting together for fellowship and social events and we invite everyone to come in check it out”.

The facility has a seating capacity of over 200 and is fully licensed. They host all kinds of sports leagues including shuffleboard, darts, golf and curling. Dances are held regularly and there are meat draws on Saturdays. They also have a meeting hall and updated kitchen which can be rented out for weddings and parties.

Due to covid restrictions, patrons must be fully vaccinated, and masks are mandatory. “We haven’t been able to do a lot of events in the community because of COVID the last year or two, but generally we work to serve the community by assisting with many ANAVETS programs in support of youth, veterans, seniors, disabled and others through things like sport sponsorships and academic development through our bursary and scholarship award programs,” said Dagenais.

ANAVETS first made their presence known in Prince Albert in 1924. At the time, the organization’s purpose was to help the local veterans and their widows in their quest for things like pensions and rehabilitations from the government.

Today, ANAVETS still tends to the welfare of veterans. Dagenais said anyone who serves as a peace officer, which includes all police officers, RCMP and city police, federal and provincial correctional officers and provincial resource officers, are welcome to join as active members, along with the general public as associate members. There is an annual $45 association fee.

“We welcome new members who want to have some fun, keep the best interests of the community at heart and maintain traditions of the organization.”
