Listen: Clubroot continues to spread in Saskatchewan

Jan 10, 2022 | 4:13 PM

MELFORT, Sask. — The Saskatchewan government and SaskCanola released the 2021 Clubroot Distribution Map, which outlines the rural municipalities where clubroot has been identified in the province.

Visible symptoms have been confirmed in 80 commercial canola fields since 2017. This has increased by five fields since the 2020 clubroot update.

The number of fields where clubroot pathogen DNA has been detected in soil samples increased by nine in 2021, for a total of 38 fields in the province.

The areas affected are north of Yorkton, south and west of Saskatoon, west of Swift Current and parts of the northern grainbelt around Prince Albert, Melfort, and North Battleford.

SaskCanola agronomy extension specialist Kaeley Kindrachuk said the goal of the testing is to detect the pathogen when spore levels are low to minimize potential impact on canola yields.
