New COVID cases hit third-highest daily total since pandemic began

Dec 30, 2021 | 1:54 PM

The province confirmed 589 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, nearly double of what was reported on Wednesday.

This is the highest single daily total since Oct. 7 and third-highest single daily total in Saskatchewan since the beginning of the pandemic. This includes 650 cases reported back in October, however, 241 of these cases were uncounted in September, and 602 cases reported on Sept. 30.

Of these new cases, 298 are among individuals who are partially or fully vaccinated, with another 291 cases among individuals who are unvaccinated. Seventy-eight cases are individuals under the age of 11.

Of the new cases, 46 are located in the northern zones of the province; Far North West (three), Far North East (one), North West (20), North Central (18), and North East (four).

Four new deaths were also reported today bringing the provincial total to 955.

There are now 2,176 cases considered active in the province, a 531 case jump from yesterday’s total. There are currently 201 active cases in the northern zones of the province, a 43 case jump.

Almost one-half (46.5 per cent) of new cases are between the ages of 20 and 39.

More than one-half (52.3 per cent) of new cases eligible for vaccination (aged 5 years and older) were fully vaccinated.

As of Dec. 30, a total of 79 individuals are hospitalized with 14 being treated in the ICU. Of the 79 patients, 47 (59.5 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

Despite the spike of cases, hospitalization rates are continuing a decrease that started after the spike of cases in October.
