The Evergreen District Girl Guides have donated 100 handmade “hope” keychains to the ICU staff at the Victoria Hospital as thanks for all their hard work.

Monday afternoon members of the Evergreen District Girl Guides, which covers Prince Albert and area, presented hospital staff with the keychains.

Cynthia Mamer, unit guide with the Evergreen District Girl Guides, told paNOW through various service projects they have the girls engage and contribute to the community, this being one of several projects they do throughout the year.

They were inspired to make and donate the keychains after they saw the Melfort Girl Guides do the same.

“We thought we’d do the same and just kind of pay it forward so to speak,” she said. “Just a little pick me upper for people working so hard. Especially through the holidays it can be really tough.”

She added it was great to have some of the girls at the event to see their good deeds come full circle and the impact they’re having.

Harper Kinash and Accalia Dickens were two of the Girl Guide members at the event who helped make the keychains.

Kinash said she made four of the keychains because the hospital staff have worked so hard during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It made me feel happy because the staff are happy,” she said.

Raeanne Gerstner, nursing unit manager on level five of the Victoria Hospital, said it’s really nice people are still thinking of them and are so supportive.

“We really appreciate the support through this extended pandemic,” she said. “It’s really uplifting, and you know sometimes it all gets kind of monotonous and you lose sight of things but it’s nice to have that pick me up once and a while and to know that people still really care and support what you’re doing.”

She added the fact the girls handmade them makes it even more precious, thoughtful and sweet.

“Thank you for thinking of us and for continuing to support us,” Gerstner said.
