Kikinahk delivering close to 240 Christmas hampers next week

Approximately 240 families will benefit from the 2021 La Ronge Christmas Hamper Project organized by the Kikinahk Friendship Centre.

That’s according to executive director Ron Woytowich, who explained staff had to stop taking applications early due to the amount of people who were interested. Each hamper will include a turkey, stuffing, bread, oranges, vegetables and cranberry sauce.

“People really need it. There’s just a lot less people working and because of the price of food increasing and everything else,” he said.

Woytowich noted Kikinahk has been organizing the Christmas hamper project for more than 25 years, adding about 10 years ago the cost was about $5,000 but that has ballooned to nearly $25,000 for 2021.

This Christmas hamper project was made possible by three major donations from Cameco, Orano and the Association of Metis Non & Status Indians Saskatchewan.

“It was really nice this year to know we didn’t have to go to the community asking for food,” Woytowich said. “Every other year we do our best to seek donations and this year was nice because we had the cash.”

The hampers will be delivered to households on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
