City of P.A. looking into possible funding to create new library

Dec 16, 2021 | 5:34 PM

Prince Albert could be home to a new library.

The city’s council met earlier this week where they approved a motion to look into whether or not adding a library onto the South East Sports & Culture Complex project could be funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Mayor Greg Dionne was the only one to vote against the motion, citing concerns about the addition affecting grants they’re receiving for the overall project.

Councillor Ted Zurakowski, who brought the motion forward and is a part of P.A.’s Public Library Board, told paNOW adding a new branch has been in discussion for years.

“It’s all about the dollar and that’s always been the hesitation; where’s the money coming from.”

If the funding is able to cover the costs and the project is approved by P.A.’s council, the new library would be intended for youth and their families.

Along with benefitting the younger generation, Zurakowski believes adding a new space will align P.A. with other communities.

“You will not find a multi-use recreational facility anywhere in Western Canada that doesn’t have a branch library.”

The P.A.’s Public Library Board has looked into potential designs and costs; however, nothing has been approved by P.A.’s council at this time.
