Winter weights now permitted in northern Saskatchewan

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced starting on Monday winter weights will be allowed on all applicable highways in northern Saskatchewan.
Winter weights allow for truckers to carry up to 15-20 per cent more payload on the highways than can be carried during the warmer months. The truckers use the secondary highways because typically it results in fewer trips, efficient movement to primary highways, and saves on costs.
“Winter weights are an ongoing ministry initiative that maximizes the amount of goods that can be transported by truck in Saskatchewan,” Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw said in a media release. “Since our economy is export-based, trucking is one of the key methods to get important goods to market to keep our provincial economy competitive.”
Depending on the weather, winter weight season can begin as early as Nov. 16 but when conditions are more mild like this year the winter weights can be delayed and are usually removed March 15.
