MELFORT, Sask. – The latest crop report from Statistics Canada does not come as a surprise to prairie farmers.

Production fell more than 35 per cent this year to its lowest total since 2007.

The national canola crop is estimated at 12.6 million tonnes, with an average yield of 25 bushels an acre.

Heat and dry conditions had the greatest effect in Saskatchewan, with an average canola yield of 22 bushels an acre.

Most of the canola in Canada is grown in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

The threat of a strike at an Alberta beef processing plant has been averted after workers accepted the owner’s latest offer.

The union that represents about 2,000 workers at the Cargill beef plant in High River said its members have voted 71 per cent in favour of accepting the company’s contract.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union said the contract is the best of its kind and presented unprecedented gains in a time of economic and political uncertainty.

Jarrod Gillig is the business operations and supply chain president for Cargill’s North American protein business. He said the deal is comprehensive and fair, adding it reflects their employees’ commitment to excellence.

Canada’s ambassador to China is leaving his post at the end of the month.

Dominic Barton spent two tense years in the job, working to win the release of detained Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.

The former business executive faced some criticism for pushing for greater trade ties with China, even as the Michaels were imprisoned.
