Dec 3, 2021 | 8:46 AM

UPDATE: The final total raised in this year’s radiothon is $351,281.68.

It’s a big day for Prince Albert the Victoria Hospital Foundation as the annual Give A Little Life Day Radiothon takes over the airwaves.

This year’s edition of the radiothon, the 16th annual will be held at Mann Northway GM from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Power99 FM, 101.5 Beach Radio and 900 CKBI.

Since its inception, the Give a Little Life Day radiothon has raised over $8 million enabling the Victoria Hospital Foundation to make major investments in dozens of areas like Maternity, eye care and ICU, digital mammography and endoscopy equipment.

This year, however, the foundation has decided to focus on the hospital’s greatest needs.

“Donations will allow the Victoria Hospital Foundation to look at the list that never gets any shorter. We can simply say to you, here’s where we’re using your dollars to the best of our abilities to make sure that people receiving care in our Victoria Hospital are getting the best possible care thanks to the generosity of people,” said Lyle Karasiuk, chairman of the board.

One of the biggest donations came just after 4:00 p.m. Friday where the Chokani family donated $6,000.

Andrew McLetchie, vice president of Integrated Northern Health for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), when asked how important is it for people outside of Prince Albert to make a donation to Give a Little Life Day, he said it goes a long way.

“Many of the northern communities have hospitals or nursing stations and when people get sick in those communities or sick to the point where they’re not able to be cared for in their home community Prince Albert is one of the key referral places that people come to,” he said. “Often we have a high number of patients in the P.A. Victoria Hospital that are actually from outside of the Prince Albert area.”

Carol Gregoryk, executive director of acute care for the northeast area for the SHA said the last two years has been incredibly difficult for the staff at the hospital.

“I’ve never in my entire career which has long seen what we’ve had to go through with the COVID patients and how hard all of our staff have worked as a result of that,” she said. “If it wasn’t for the community support in anyway, be that signs or thank you’s, or any funding for equipment we would really have been lost and it’s been quite a boost when we’ve received that.”

Kai, 13, and Halle Twyver, 15, have been donating at Give a Little Life Day every year for at least six years. This year they donated $100 and said they do it to give back to the community.

“Everyone has to use the hospital and family and friends no matter what it is so it feels good to help the community,” Halle said.

They challenge everyone to go out and donate today.
