Raiders will hope Kaiden Guhle trade will benefit them as much as Brendan’s did

If you think Wednesday’s blockbusting Prince Albert Raider trade seemed familiar, that’s because it very much was. It was the second time Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt traded away a Guhle brother.

During the Raiders’ 8-12-1 start, Hunt dealt captain Kaiden Guhle to his hometown Edmonton Oil Kings in a blockbuster deal that grabbed attention across the hockey world on Wednesday.

Hunt and the Raiders will hope Kaiden Guhle’s trade will have the same impact that older brother Brendan Guhle’s deal had on the team.

Even though the Raiders traded Brendan to the Prince George Cougars back on Nov. 18, 2016, the Raiders are still profiting off the trade. The deal also provided a ton of crucial pieces during the Raiders’ 2019 WHL Championship-winning run.

In the Brendan Guhle deal, the Raiders received former Raider assistant captain Max Martin, tough guy and fan favourite Kolby Johnson, a 2018 first-round pick, and a 2019 third-round pick. Martin was a point-producing, minute-muncher on the blueline for the Raiders from 2016-2019, scoring 41 points in 59 games during the Raiders’ championship year, adding eight helpers in the playoffs, and was +14.

That 2019 third-round pick was the featured piece in the trade that acquired Noah Gregor from the Victoria Royals, along with a 2019 eighth-round pick and conditional fourth rounder. Gregor scored twice in Game 7 in the WHL finals, before setting up the famous OT winner from Dante Hannoun.

That 2018 first round pick turned into Nolan Allan, who is now the highest touted defenceman on the Raiders. Martin was traded at the beginning of the 2019-20 season to the Kamloops Blazers. The biggest piece the Raiders received in exchange was a 2020 second round pick—who the Raiders used to select Harrison Lodewyk. Lodewyk finished with a silver medal with Canada red at the 2021 Capital City Challenge in Ottawa.

The Raiders seemed to have received a similar package back for Kaiden Guhle, with the 13^th overall pick in 2021 (previously belonging to the Kelowna Rockets), a first-round pick in 2023, a sixth-round pick in 2022, and a conditional third-round pick in 2025, as well as 18-year-old forward and former third-rounder Carson Latimer, as well as 2004-born defenceman Eric Johnston.

If that haul from the Oil Kings turns out to be anywhere near as fruitful as the Brendan Guhle return from the Cougars, then Raider fans should have a ton to look forward to in the future.
