Canadians are ‘hog wild’ over bacon

MELFORT, Sask. – Bacon is unquestionably one of Canada’s favourite foods. To celebrate bacon month in December Maple Leaf Foods is releasing the results of a survey of Canadians impressions on this much-loved pork product.

A study of 990 meat-eating Canadians who have eaten bacon in the past six months revealed nearly half of Canadians believe bacon makes everything taste better.

Maple Leaf Foods vice president of communications Janet Riley said Canadians’ passion for bacon is unmistakable.

“In fact, 12 per cent of Canadians think bacon should be our national food,” Riley said. “A single day seemed insufficient to celebrate all that bacon means to Canada, so we’re expanding National Bacon Day into National Bacon Month.”

The study also found 61 per cent of respondents preferred regular bacon strips at mealtime and 20 per cent enjoy the sweet and salty combination of maple flavoured bacon best.

Most Canadians prefer to prepare their bacon on the stovetop, pan-fried. Another 30 per cent enjoy it grilled or barbecued. Canadians are split on their preference of crispy bacon or a bit crispy and a bit soft.

Bacon is more than a breakfast treat and is being enjoyed across a wide variety of dishes.

The survey found 82 per cent enjoyed bacon on their burgers, 39 per cent on poutine. Some home cooked enjoy adding bacon to their pancakes.

Maple Leaf Foods encourages Canadians to celebrate bacon in creative ways during holiday festivities.
