MELFORT, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Agtech Accelerator that will work to build the talent base in the agricultural industry.

The Agtech Accelerator is a venture-capital-backed accelerator assisting early-stage start-ups that are seeking solutions to global agricultural problems through innovation and technological advances. It was launched earlier this year.

The accelerator will provide companies with the tools they need to grow, secure capital, and create high-quality job opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in Saskatchewan.

Through partnerships with Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions, including USask, the accelerator can collaborate directly with researchers and educators, and work to fill both knowledge and labour gaps in the sector.

The 2021 4-H Alberta Hall of Fame inductee has been announced.

Lorraine Parkinson has been involved in 4-H at the club, district, regional, and provincial level as a club leader, treasurer, key leader, Calgary region president, and was a representative on the 4-H Foundation Board.

Parkinson is the mother of four whose children all participated in 4-H from age nine through 18 in the Golden Rod Multi Club.

The 4-H Alberta Hall of Fame honours Albertans who have made exceptional contributions to the 4-H program as a volunteer through outstanding leadership and have significantly impacted 4-H youth and leaders.

An awards ceremony will take place in 2022, pending COVID-19 restrictions.

TELUS Agriculture is committing $100,000 to support British Columbia farmers, farms, families, and livestock that continue to be affected by the unprecedented weather events and catastrophic flooding.

The company will give $50,000 to the B.C. Agriculture Council, and $50,000 of in-kind support in veterinary services, comfort kits, and network access.

President John Raines said the company is committed to supporting agriculture communities when disaster strikes.

“It is an honour for our team to lend our support to British Columba’s farming community as they continue to deal with the effects of the unprecedented flooding to their homes and livelihoods,” Raines said. “Our team is thinking of those affected and we are committed to supporting the community as they assess, recover, and rebuild.”

TELUS Agriculture will be running a social media campaign until Dec. 14 called #HereForFarmers to bring awareness of the disaster’s impact. The social media campaign will give an additional $1 for every interaction with the #HereForFarmers campaign, up to $10,000.
