Vaccine Policy

P.A. council updating proof of vaccine policy to include everyone five years old and up

Anyone at least five years old in Prince Albert will soon need to be fully vaccinated or provide a negative COVID-19 test to enter certain city facilities.

City council met on Monday where they approved updating the vaccine policy now that the Pfizer vaccine is available for children ages 5-11.

This won’t come into effect until Feb. 28, 2022, while those who turn five afterwards will have 90 days from their birthday to get vaccinated or start providing negative tests.

This is similar to the motion passed back in October after the vaccine was made available for those as young as 12.

Those under the age of 12 who are currently eligible have 90 days to start showing proof of vaccination, while those who turn five before the end of February will also get 90 days from their birthday.

“It gives them lots of time to get vaccinated,” said Mayor Greg Dionne.

The only city facilities where individuals won’t need to show they’re vaccinated or a negative test are the police service headquarters and substation, city hall foyer, and airport.

The ones to vote against the motion were Councillors Blake Edwards and Tony Head.

“The five to 12-year-olds don’t have a voice, we’re not going to change those parents [opinions],” added Edwards.

Head told paNOW he agrees with Edwards’ concern, while also believing the provincial government should be making this type of decision.

Meanwhile, there’s a chance this could be updated in the near future.

Dionne plans on bringing forward a motion to remove negative tests as an option.

“There’s certainly a time when we have to put an end to it because it can’t go on forever.”

A motion was slated to be debated at Monday’s meeting, however, Dionne removed it as he was concerned with its wording.

He wants to meet with Prince Albert Public Health Officer Dr. Khami Chokani before bringing it back for consideration with city council.
