Inquest ordered for Prince Albert in-custody death

Nov 23, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The Provincial Coroner’s Service has confirmed for paNOW an inquest will be held in relation to an in-custody death in Prince Albert.

On the evening of Dec. 1, 2020, Jordan Larry Norfield was apprehended on a detention order under the Public Health Act.

Officers took the 30-year-old to police cells and then transported him to the Victoria Hospital the next morning for assessment and treatment.

Four days days later, Norfield died in hospital and an autopsy was performed Dec. 9. The cause of death has not been released.

The purpose of an inquest is not to lay blame, but rather establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

The dates and location for the inquest have not yet been finalized.
