Over 700 days following the last Canadian Western Agribition, Saskatchewan’s own agriculture show is back in Saskatchewan in time for 50th anniversary.

After the COVID pandemic made last year’s show an impossibility, the premier farm show and sale kicked off the six-day event at Evraz Place in Regina with the traditional burning of the brands this morning.

Agribition president Chris Lees told farmnewsNOW everyone is just excited to be back.

“We’re working with the city and the government and as far as the COVID part of it goes, you know, we’re here, we’re gonna follow the rules and try and keep everybody as healthy as we can. As far as the show goes, I mean, agriculture is agriculture, and we’re just looking forward to getting going again.”

Last year they had little choice to shut down the show, but Lees said the virtual show put on in place of the in person show was also a success. This year’s show is in person with pandemic regulations in place.

“The government wanted to work with us, the city wants to work with us, Evraz wanted to work with us, and we definitely wanted to get the show back up and running,” Lees said.

Spence Sutter’s father, Christian, was the first president and founder of the Agribition board 50 years ago. Watching the show year after year, Sutter said the show has grown beyond the founder’s expectations.

“It’s been a show that I think has changed with the times throughout the years. I think that is something you have to do these days,” Sutter said.

Support from the government and the City of Regina has been crucial to growing the show. Minister of Agriculture David Marit was on hand to announce the Saskatchewan government’s continued support of Agribition. In order to continue the great relationship between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Agribition, Marit announced the signing of a new five-year contract with the Agribition.

“As it’s been said we’re the second largest cow/calf producer in Canada with the numbers growing and we want to continue to see that,” Marit said.

The show will continue at Evraz Place with 150 events taking place until Nov. 27 and 300 trade shows gracing the halls.
