SNOW REMOVAL

Be careful when hiring snow removal companies: BBB

Nov 18, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The winter storm that blasted through most of Saskatchewan has come and gone and now the cleanup begins.

Some areas of the province received as much as 30 centimetres of snow this week on top of high winds resulting in snowdrifts. All that means is a lot of work shovelling and clearing walkways and driveways.

Snow clearing companies will likely get a lot of calls to help with the clearing, but how do you know if the people you’re hiring are legitimate?

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Saskatchewan said they sometimes receive complaints regarding companies or individuals hired to remove snow.

CEO Karen Smith said one common mistake consumers make is not having all the right information at the start.

“Maybe not understanding what’s to be expected fully. Maybe poor communication or a shortfall on research by the consumers.”

The BBB has a tool on its website that encourages consumers to get a quote for snow clearing services before deciding on a company to hire.

On top of getting that number, Smith said consumers should have more than one estimate and make sure to receive an agreement in writing.

Having the right insurance coverage is also key.

“If they do damage to your property or they slip and fall on your property, they may or may not have worker’s compensation because they may not have established a company themselves, they may be doing this on the side.”

Smith added if the snow clearing company is hired on more than one occasion, consumers should ask questions about scheduling and how payments work.

If you run into a problem or feel that you are being scammed by a snow removal company, you’re encouraged to file a complaint with the BBB.
