Peekeekoot scores twice, Raiders start on time in win over Broncos

During his Friday post-game interviews after a disappointing defeat to the Red Deer Rebels, Prince Albert Raiders captain Kaiden Guhle wanted his team to get off to better starts.

Guhle and the rest of the Raiders got their wish as they scored the first three goals on Saturday en route to a 4-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on the road.

“We’re a little happier tonight,” Raiders assistant coach Jeff Truitt said after the game. “There’s a lot more urgency in the offence. The shots on goal (32-16 Raiders) in the first period (9-4 P.A.) and the second period (13-6) were indicative of the play. I thought we had, especially in the first period, sustained pressure.”

The Raiders had a 2-0 lead after the first period thanks to goals from Evan Herman and Dallyn Peekeekoot’s first of two markers in the game.

Herman scored bar-down on Broncos goaltender Reid Dyck, after receiving a nice centering pass from Ozzy Wiesblatt. Peekeekoot’s first came after a funny hop right off an offensive zone faceoff, as he found the loose puck and extended the Raiders’ lead to 2-0, 12:37 into the frame.

And 1:42 into the second period, Peekeekoot would extend the Raiders’ lead to 3-0, tipping home a point shot on the power play from Landon Kosior.

“I loved it,” Truitt said of Peekeekoot’s performance, as the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation product didn’t play in Friday’s game against the Rebels. “He didn’t play here last night, but it was just a numbers thing. He comes back into the lineup and produces like that, it’s always exciting for Dallyn. When he’s shooting the puck, that’s when he’s at his best.”

The Broncos would score their lone goal on the power play midway through the second period, with Owen Pickering dumping the puck in, heading towards the net, and putting home a quick wrist shot after a nifty passing play.

Tyson Laventure would seal it late for the Raiders on an empty-net goal.
