Saskatoon solar farm projected for 2023

Nov 7, 2021 | 8:53 AM

Pending approval from Saskatoon city council, a large solar farm with 5,000 solar panels could soon be built in the city on the west side of Circle Drive.

Ward Two Councillor Hilary Gough is Vice Chair of the Environment Committee and is all for the project.

She told 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks the solar farm would be connected to the power grid in the Montgomery neighbourhood.

“It is projected to produce 2.2 megawatts of solar power, which is going to be enough to power just over 333 homes. It’s a considerable project and actually more than we had been hoping to install in this project itself,” she said.

The solar project would also reduce operating costs at Saskatoon Light and Power every year.

“We will be able to off-set some of our future costs because of that and make sure that we can have affordable power and a well-maintained utility well into the future.”

If approved by council at the end of the month, construction would start by 2022 and the project could be up and running by summer 2023.

The project will generate power for about 30 years and cost $4.25 million. Gough says it will take seven years to it pay off as they have received federal and provincial funding for about $2.5 million.
