Hat trick Stanick, Laventure with two in second straight win over Blades

It took him a little while to score his first point with the Prince Albert Raiders, but Sloan Stanick sure made up for lost time on Saturday.

Stanick scored a hat trick and added an assist, while Tyson Laventure added a pair of markers as the Raiders defeated the Saskatoon Blades 5-2 at the SaskTel Centre. The win also completes the weekend sweep, after the Raiders beat the Blades 5-1 on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre.

With the sweep, the Raiders have now won three straight games, and have a 3-0-0-1 record in their past four games. They improve to 5-7-0-1 in the standings.

Stanick was held scoreless for his first five Raider games after coming over in a trade from the Regina Pats, before his four-point night. He now has four goals and seven points in 11 total games this year.

But even when the points weren’t coming, the Raiders were impressed with how hard he worked and how he carried himself. The entire team erupted on the bench when Stanick scored his first as a Raider.

“Sloan is really molding himself well in our dressing room, and on the ice with the way that he plays—power play, penalty kill for sure. He’s on our top six [forward group] and he works extremely hard,” Raiders assistant coach Jeff Truitt said. “When a new guy comes in, you kind of wonder, ‘jeepers, I hope he molds into what we want,’ but he’s been real easy to work with. He’s absorbed what our culture’s all about and he’s fit right in. We were thrilled for him on the bench when that first one went in, the guys were hooting and hollering pretty good.”

Stanick scored the lone goal of the first period, a quick wrist shot on the rush to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage after the opening frame.

Stanick then scored his second of the game just 50 seconds into the second period. After drawing a penalty shot, Stanick beat Blades’ goaltender Ethan Chadwick through the five-hole to double the Raiders lead.

After setting up Tyson Laventure for the Raiders’ third goal, Stanick waited until the third period to complete his hat trick. He scored on the power play, the Raiders’ second of the game to make it 5-1.

And not to be outdone by Stanick and Laventure who filled the scoresheet, but Carter Serhyenko was again solid in net. He made 24 saves on 26 shots for his third consecutive victory. Not only that, but Serhyenko has only surrendered four goals in his past three games.

“At the beginning of the year, I think it was a little bit of a confidence struggle. At times, he didn’t look poised or confident for whatever reason. Sometimes, it’s just bad decisions and puck playing, and whatnot,” Truitt said of Serhyenko’s start to the season. “But he’s straightened that out, and bit by bit, he and [goaltending coach] Kelly Guard have got on the same page. I think Kelly’s done a lot of video work with him, and he’s taken that from the video room and put it in practice, and takes it to the game. I think we’re seeing some positive results.”

The Raiders held Kyle Crnkovic completely off the scoresheet in the two games, despite him coming into the weekend with 10 goals and 20 points, good for third in the league in both categories. Tristen Robins was the top point-getter with 22 points, the Raiders held him scoreless through the weekend as well until Robins scored the 5-2 goal with 2:24 remaining in the game.
