MELFORT, Sask.- Federal, provincial, and territorial agriculture ministers will meet in Guelph, Ont. next week.

The meeting, originally scheduled for September, was postponed due to the federal election campaign.

Newly reappointed Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau confirmed the meeting will be Nov. 9 and 10. While some ministers will be joining virtually others will attend in-person.

A main agenda item will be discussion on the next partnership agreement for 2023 to 2028.

Guelph has been scheduled to host the 2020 federal-provincial-territorial annual meeting, but that meeting was postponed due to COVID-19.

The Canadian Dairy Commission recommended an 8.4 per cent increase in farm gate milk prices which is expected to increase the cost of dairy products on store shelves in the new year.

The commission said the price increase is expected to be approved by provincial authorities next month and take effect Feb. 1.

The commission said feed, energy and fertilizer costs have all been particularly impacted, causing farmer revenues to fall below the cost of production.

Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, said the price hike is nearly double the previous record of 4.52 per cent set in 2017.

He said the retail price of milk in grocery stores could increase as much as 10 per cent while prices for dairy products like butter, cheese and yogurt could soar as much as 15 per cent.
